Ireland

August 2018

Somewhat on the spur of the moment, my daughter Julia and I decided to take a quick trip to Ireland.  We travelled over by ferry with our car from Cherbourg to Rosslare and visited Cork, Cashel, Kilkenny, Galway, Raheen in County Laois, Dublin, and ended with an overnight stay in the Wicklow Mountains.

There is a small series within this series on the vestiges of British rule.  Scattered around the country are old letterboxes, repainted from red to green, that were installed during the reigns of British monarchs of Ireland: Victoria, Edward VII, and George (no number given, but presumably the fifth of that name).

PS: I have since learned that Irish Ferries has sold the boat we travelled over on, the Oscar Wilde, which was something of a blow to Julia and me.  We had the sticker with the name of the vessel that they give you when you board stuck to the dashboard as a reminder that I was driving in Ireland and therefore on the other side of the road.  Every time I started up the car, I would tap the sticker and say, "Saint Oscar, pray for us."  Worked a charm.
